Refraction is an audiovisual installation consisting of a three-meter-long cymatics table and a light
source suspended above it. The stainless steel basin embedded in a wooden structure is equipped
with four transducers that set the water on the basin surface into vibration. The type and intensity of
the water vibrations are determined by the frequencies and bass impulses of the music program. The
structure hanging above the cymatics table is equipped with LED strips that react to the audio
material used. Through the reflection and refraction of light in the water, a surface is created where
patterns between chaos and order emerge. The music program for Refraction was produced by
Oliver Albach. The percussive, almost atonal orientation of the music was chosen with reference to
the angular design language of the installation. Refraction thus stands in direct contrast to Gleam.
Both installations form a symbiosis on the level of musical design.
